This photo surfaced back in 2007, and now the experts at Dartmouth University and Amherst College who have been studying it are ready to say, yes, this is Emily Dickinson.
Over the last few years, the image has been compared in detail to the one previously known photo of Dickinson. Eyelids, earlobes, and hairline strongly suggest they are both the same person. If this one does indeed turn out to be Dickinson, Amherst College believes it will “change our idea of her, providing a view of the poet as a mature woman showing striking presence, strength, and serenity.”
It will also likely change the covers of future biographies and Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson, which will now have two alternatives.
