The Tin Man, aka The Tin Woodman, aka Nick Chopper

The local high school put on The Wizard of Oz last weekend. While we were waiting for the lights to go down and the curtain to go up, my daughter leaned over to me, pointed at the program, and said: “The ‘Tin Woodman’? I thought he was just the Tin Man?”

Yup, his real name is the Tin Woodman. And his real real name is Nick Chopper.

Which is hilariously, grotesquely, punningly/pun-ishingly apt since he wasn’t always made of tin but was a flesh and blood man until The Wicked Witch of the East put a spell on his ax so that it nicked and chopped one part of his body off after another. He replaced these one at a time with tin parts.

In The Tin Woodman of Oz, he comes across a Tin Soldier who got that way in the same way: the Wicked Witch of the East had enchanted his sword. The Tin Woodman and the Tin Soldier both got into their predicaments due to love of the same woman. (Don’t ask me how–I haven’t read the Oz sequels…though now I kind of want to.)
